History
This beautiful Tudor-style house has had an interesting history. Designed in 1909 by Vancouver’s leading residential archtitect, Samuel Maclure, it is a good example of Tudor revival architecture. It was built for James S. Rear, GM of American Life Insurance and in 1918 was bought by Colonel Victor Spencer who named it “Aberthau”, Gaelic for 'a place filled with light'. It was used as an officer's mess during WW II and obtained by the Park Board in 1974 when the federally owned parcel of land known as Jericho Beach was given to the City.
